Our zero-waste tip for reusing leftovers from your morning coffee!

In English, Zero Waste means “zero waste”.

In Switzerland, the amount of waste produced is around 700kg per capita per year.

In terms of food waste, the figure is 100kg!

Even if collective initiatives are being put in place, and supermarkets and restaurants are making some efforts, there is still a lot of work to be done in our kitchens.

Cooking leftovers, recycling peelings, managing stocks and anticipating deadlines are of course essential actions, but let’s also be more creative and dare to experiment!

That’s what reducing waste is all about. Trying to reuse our kitchen scraps as much as possible.

The other day, for example, we made skin-scrubbing pebbles from coffee grounds. We added coconut oil, which is solid at room temperature, to make these ultra-nourishing, skin-toning pebbles!

With just two ingredients, we’ve created a super-effective natural product. The coffee granules are totally biodegradable, unlike the plastic particles sometimes found in some industrial scrubs.

Coffee grounds, rich in caffeine, vitamins and anti-oxidants, gently exfoliate the skin of the face and body thanks to their very fine grains, which eliminate dead cells and refine skin texture. It also tones the skin by promoting micro-circulation, and helps combat cellulite thanks to caffeine’s draining, detoxifying and firming properties.

Coconut oil is nourishing, soothing and softening.

Favoring natural products, such as honey, sugar and salt, is good for us and for the planet. It costs next to nothing, and these vitamin- and mineral-packed ingredients are a marvel for the body!

Coffee grounds are something of a miracle product. In the garden, it can be used to fertilize plants by sprinkling it at their base, as a repellent against nematodes – those pesky slugs – and it works wonders in your compost. It degreases drains, deodorizes your fridge and, what’s more, is good for your skin! Not only does it invigorate and detoxify, it also adds a slight “healthy glow” effect when applied to the face! In short, it has multiple properties.

Here’s our little recipe for exfoliating pebbles:

Ingredients

50g coffee grounds, direct from your coffee maker, or dried

50g coconut oil

small disinfected silicone molds

How to proceed

Melt the coconut oil in a double boiler.

Add the coffee grounds and mix well to obtain a homogeneous texture.

Transfer the mixture to the silicone moulds, packing well.

Refrigerate for at least an hour before unmolding.

Store in a cool place, one pebble can be used on the body and face.

It will melt in the shower and on contact with your skin.

Use

Rub the pod in a circular motion over the entire body, which will then come into contact with it.

The skin will melt, releasing the coffee beans. After a few minutes of exfoliation

rinse thoroughly.

Keep for 3 months in a jar in the fridge (to prevent melting).
