If there’s one thing to avoid at home if you don’t want to have a polluted home and breathe in synthetic perfumes and other undesirable chemical compounds, it’s industrial candles. Indeed, most candles bought in supermarkets are made from kerosene, a petroleum derivative. Once burned, these airborne particles diffuse into your home, irritating mucous membranes.
Fortunately, there are alternatives: natural waxes. Beeswax, rapeseed wax or soy wax. Here’s a DIY tip for making your own 100% natural beeswax candles.
Make your own 100% natural beeswax candles
Ingredients:
- Beeswax flakes
- Wicks (in organic cotton if possible, or make your own with string (to be soaked in wax) and a paper clip (or small pebble) hanging from the end, as a base)
- Glass jars (with a certain diameter, so that you can reach the wick easily even after the candle has burned down – jam, tapenade, etc.)
- 1 container and 1 saucepan to melt the wax in a bain-marie
- 1 wooden spoon
Procedure: :
1. To melt the beeswax in a bain-marie, you’ll need a dedicated container – a stainless steel bowl or saucepan (you may not be able to reuse it for cooking food, so opt for an old one). Place your container in a larger saucepan containing water and melt the beeswax over low heat.
2. How long this takes will depend on how much wax you have, but it should take about ten minutes. Stir occasionally with a wooden chopstick to make sure all the wax melts evenly.
3. In parallel, you can prepare your wicks by gluing them with wax to the bottom of your containers. Make sure your wick is in the center. To do this, you can use a clothespin to thread the wick through the center of the peg, which will rest on the edges of your container.
4. Quickly pour the melted wax into the containers. If you wait, the wax will harden and not render properly.
5. Once the candles have been filled, place them in a place that’s not too cold to allow them to cool. Thermal shock could cause cracks, which wouldn’t be very pretty.
