What is the Miswak stick?

Miswak is the root (or sometimes the stem) of the Salvadora persica tree, also known as the Arak tree or “toothbrush tree”. It grows slowly in the arid, sandy soils of Africa and Asia.

Its natural fibers act like a soft brush, removing plaque, massaging gums and even cleaning the tongue. All without any additives! At Les Paillettes Vertes, our sticks come from Kerala (India) and are 100% natural, biodegradable and vegan.

A thousand years of history: from the Prophet Muhammad to your bathroom

Miswak is not a trend: it’s an ancestral tradition. The Babylonians, Egyptians and Greeks have been using it since ancient times.

In Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly recommended it (Sunna): it is said that he advised its use before every prayer to purify the mouth. Even today, millions of people in Africa, the Middle East and Asia use it daily.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has even recognized its value for oral hygiene in regions where access to brushes and toothpaste is limited.

So it’s much more than an object: it’s a living link between past and present, between tradition and ecology.

The benefits of Miswak: science speaks for itself

Scientific studies confirm what users have known for centuries. According to a 2015 literature review published in the Saudi Medical Journal (article PMC4436748):

  • Powerful antibacterial: thanks to salvadorine, sulfur and essential oils, it fights the bacteria responsible for plaque, cavities and unpleasant odors.
  • Plaque reduction: more effective than conventional brushes in interdental spaces.
  • Gum health: massages and strengthens tissues, reduces inflammation and bleeding.
  • Caries prevention: naturally contains fluoride, silica (which polishes enamel) and vitamin C.
  • Fresh breath and improved taste: cleanses the tongue and stimulates saliva production.

Other research shows comparable or superior results to traditional toothbrushes, with no side effects.

How to use the Miswak stick in 5 easy steps

It’s ultra-simple, even when travelling or at the gym! Here’s the method recommended by Les Paillettes Vertes:

  1. Rinse the stick under running water.
  2. Chew the tip for 1 to 2 cm until the fibers separate and form a soft brush (spit out any residue).
  3. Brush your teeth as you would with a conventional brush: up and down and in circular movements. No need for toothpaste!
  4. Clean your tongue for ultra-fresh breath.
  5. Rinse the stick and let it air-dry. Trim off the worn end every 2-3 days.

A single stick lasts about 2 to 3 weeks, depending on use.
