Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be dispelling some myths about DIY practices<\/strong>, for those who make their own homemade cleaning products. <\/span><\/p>\n

Today, we’re tackling the classic combination when it comes to making your own cleaning products: baking soda <\/strong>. baking soda<\/u><\/strong><\/a> & its friends <\/strong>white vinegar<\/u><\/strong><\/a> and<\/strong>citric acid<\/u><\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a plethora of recipes on the Internet that call for this mixture to be made in advance<\/strong>. In our opinion, this is a mistake, as it is totally unnecessary and even counter-productive<\/strong>… Why is this? Find out below! <\/span><\/p>\n

Preparing liquid baking soda and vinegar in advance is a bad idea!<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Ditto if you use a mixture of baking soda & citric acid + water. <\/span><\/p>\n

In all cases, the combination of base (bicarbonate) and acid (vinegar or citric acid) produces an effervescent reaction when it comes into contact with water<\/strong> (CO2 is released). <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Basically, it pschhht<\/strong> down your drains, down your toilet, onto your oven tray, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you mix baking sod<\/a> a with vinegar<\/strong>, as there’s already water in the vinegar, the reaction is instantaneous<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you mix bicarbonate of soda<\/a> with dehydratedcitric acid<\/a><\/strong> (the most commonly used granular form), the reaction won’t take place until you bring them into contact with water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing<\/strong> that,<\/strong> it<\/strong> is<\/strong> not recommended<\/strong> (because<\/strong> useless)<\/strong> prepare<\/strong> your<\/strong> product<\/strong> \u00e0<\/strong> in advance<\/strong> at<\/strong> creating<\/strong> this<\/strong> reaction<\/strong> effervescence.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Why?<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the foam has subsided, you’re left with sodium acetate, i.e. salt water.<\/strong> The molecules decompose and the desired properties of the base and acid are lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

Baking soda and acid are assembled in a minute! Because the peak performance of your 2 ingredients occurs when they foam<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Combined with a little elbow grease, it’s a must \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n
